Finding 17th Century JACOBITE ERA TREASURE in Scotland!! #scotland #scottishhistory #outlander
As well as being a tour guide and history lover my other passion is metal detecting. What better way to learn about Scottish history than by digging it up by yourself.
This incredible find dates to around 1690 a time of terrible turbulence in Scotland as religious wars took hold and Catholic James VII and II was deposed in favour of his Protestant daughter and son in law William and Mary.
Scotland had a lot of support for James in both the catholic and Episcopalian Clans and over the next 70yrs what became known as the Jacobite rebellions kicked off with several attempts to restore the Catholic Stewarts back as rightful monarchs of Scotland and England ending in the final uprising of 1745...

Just catching up and really enjoying all the views and info John! Thank you very much from the SE of the US.
THANK YOU for posting. I can see what it’s like outside of Utah:)
Love learning about Scotland where my grandfather came from.
😅😅
The world? Obviously never travelled much
York is my second home ❤️
I lived in a wee west highland croft house n the 1950's, and attended a school with 11 pupils from primary 1 to primary 7, with 1 teacher. I sometimes walked to school, but always walked to Sunday school n the wee church across from the school! We branched into tourists in the summer, after building a bathroom to the house. We lived in the byre with beds in at one end, and the cow and heifer in the other end! It was not partitioned at that time, as we did not know how the letting of the croft would go? I had a chanty under the bed to use, as the chemical toilet was in the henhouse, and yes the hens were in there too! Our kitchen with a gas ring was in the wee dairy which had a sink in it and could boil the kettle on! We had a corrugated iron roof on the byre, and when it rained there was a considerable racket. (noise). I could go on and on, but fear that I'll bore you all to tears! Ha-ha! .old Tich. in my 70's!
Hugely informative, brilliantly presented video. Reekie Linn is barely known but must be the most spectacular falls in Scotland. The definition of "hidden gem". Thank you for a great piece of work.
I learned today that there are no wolves or bears in Scotland. I had no idea!
With the way this world is right now, I don't think I'd mind living in the 1700's village. Life was hard, but it was also simple.....for the most part.
Just one of many highlights on this trip.
Should visit Rouen in France. Even better
FABULOUS.

Beautiful creatures! 🥰 I bought an insulated coffee cup while I was in Scotland with highland cows all over it - everyone comments how nice it is! So lucky to have them where they are, too cute to be a cow 😂
I wish I could reach…. And lord knows I try. But there are some things called table manners….. Or so my wife says.
😂😂Love the highland cows. They look so perfectly amazing❤
Wow, absolutely beautiful, John. Worth the walk.

Part of my ancestors came from Skye. Yep, a female sept of MacLeod. Lord, it's so beautiful!
Hope you’ve been for a visit!!
Great video, stunning location. You do however sound a bit like the Rev IM Jolly. 🙂
Hahaha 🤪 love that guy!
HIS SOUL WILL NEVER FIND PEACE BUT PEOPLE WITH MONEY AND FALSE POWER DONT BELIEVE IN SUCH THING BUT THEL FIND OUT AT THE END

You sound like that detectorist that i watch from time to time
That’s because I am! 😛
Ya bonnie lass!
Thanks
It amazes me how 600+ years old houses are still standing
Unbelievable isn’t it. Not only still standing but also lives in!
Truly enjoy your videos, my ancestors were Scottish and I was, raised by my Nova Scotia Scottish Grandmother and great gran so its nice to see their historical past. I've lived in Denver for yhe past 36 years. Last year we had a very rare sighting of a Pine Marten in the western sunburb of Lakewood, located in the foothills of the Rockies. They are referred to as Martens here and for one to travel down the wooded mountains is very uncommon.
John - Thank you for sharing another treasure of Scotland. So much history, beauty and incredible architecture has been preserved in Scotland.
My grandparents homestead in Alabama, USA. They built a barn and they moved in with the kids and chickens, goats, mules, pigs and lived that way until they were able to build a house. My grandfather never bought anything he could make. He bought more land and was eventually a very prosperous farmer in the area. The house had a detached kitchen in case of fire and outside privy, a well with water tower and windmill. There was a smoke house for preservation of meats. Eventually, there were two barns in addition to the house. In the 50’s my parents moved back to take care of my grandmother. Dad put in an inside bathroom. There was a pump in the kitchen. There were fireplaces everywhere and one child had died when bed clothes caught fire . They had ten children, but only 5 grew to adulthood. Scottish ancestry: MacRae
Hi!! I’ve been following your metal detector site for some time, and followed this channel too! Well the time has finally come, and I have booked my dream vacation to England & Scotland Halloween week and I wanted to know-what tour company do you work with and/or how do I make arrangements ?! It would be epic to be able to book a tour with you !!!
Thank you so much for sharing this . I grew up on Lewis so thoroughly enjoyed your trip down memory lane .👌😀🙏
